Growing up in Hungary, Monika Cassidy competed in track and field and played European team handball (basically it’s like soccer played with your hands) during her elementary and high school years. Her love of running continued after graduating college and moving to the UK, then relocating to the US in 1999 with her husband. Running turned into triathlons when she made Tampa her home and became involved with T3 Tampa Tri Team, first as an athlete and later as team captain.  

Over the years, she has run a multitude of road races, from short to long distances, including the Boston Marathon. Her true passion is triathlons, as she enjoys the challenge and cross-training aspect of the three sports. From sprints and olympic to the 70.3 distance, she has competed in countless races. You will always see and hear her cheering for everyone out on the race course, regardless their team affiliation. She is a huge supporter of the local triathlon scene and gives back to the sport as much as possible, whether it is volunteering at races or sharing with newbies the love and passion for the multisport lifestyle. “We all start as beginners. You have to help and pay it {the knowledge} forward without looking for any acknowledgment from others. Seeing athletes from all walks of life cross the finish line for the first time and then falling in love with the sport - That’s the best reward to me!” 

 

Also a Certified Personal Trainer and Group Exercise Instructor for the YMCA since 2009, Monika has always established a strong bond with her clients and class members.  “When you genuinely care about people, you will want to go above and beyond for them.” These personal relationships have been very important to Monika over the years, as an instructor and coach, and make up her training philosophy. “Be a good listener first and foremost, and keep the communication and feedback constant. Be prepared to adjust, modify, tweak a plan as needed, based on the client’s circumstances. Last but not least, keep abreast with research and new developments in the sport, as no coach is ever done learning.” 

Her two young daughters follow in their mom’s footsteps and enjoy being active whether it’s swimming, biking or running. Although they keep Monika pretty busy, however she tries to find time to take on new challenges to keep up with her daughters, such as learning how to horseback ride.
